Book Review: Business Meets the Humanities by Martina Mahnke, Mikka Nielsen, Matilde Petersen, and Lise Tjørring

Business Meets the Humanities by Martina Mahnke, Mikka Nielsen, Matilde Petersen, and Lise Tjørring

This insightful anthology looks into the complexities and benefits of university-business collaborations, emphasising the importance of a human perspective that can transform workplace dynamics and foster more humane HR practices.

Humanising Collaboration Efforts

In recent years, the expectations placed on universities have shifted, as they are increasingly called to engage meaningfully with industry partners. According to recent data, universities are now assessed not just on academic output but also on their contributions to societal well-being through partnerships. Business Meets the Humanities explores the rich potential of these collaborations, specifically within the social sciences and humanities. The anthology offers diverse perspectives on how understanding the human experience can enhance organisational processes, products, and services, making it a critical resource for those seeking to humanise HR practices in an evolving business landscape.

The book comprises contributions from a variety of scholars who investigate the challenges and dilemmas that arise from these partnerships. Some chapters showcase successful collaborations between researchers and businesses, while others provide insights into the involvement of students in practical projects. By offering reflections and real-world examples, the authors illuminate the ways in which a human-centric approach can enrich the outcomes of these collaborations. This focus is particularly relevant for HR professionals, as it emphasises the importance of empathy, communication, and understanding the nuances of employee experiences, ultimately leading to a more inclusive and supportive work environment.

I sought to identify any shortcomings in the book but found none; it stands out as a well-rounded exploration of a pertinent topic. Readers who resist the idea of integrating humanities into business practices may not appreciate the insights offered here, while those in academia or HR will find it invaluable. The themes echo the works of Peter Drucker, particularly his emphasis on the human element in effective management. Business Meets the Humanities is like breathing fresh air into a stuffy room, revitalising the conversation around collaboration with a focus on the human element.
